Episode 179: Clipboard SOS: Getting Started
For the Busy Mommas…
We bought the thing.
We probably even started…
But then we got stuck…
This podcast is your unstuck podcast.
Here are 3 things you need to get you started with your clipboards today.
Permission to Begin Messy (00:28)
It doesn’t matter if you have a clipboard or even sticky notes…all you need is that 9 grid to start. You can use anything you have on hand…tape it to a wall, put it on the fridge, clip it on some string, or laminate it…the options are endless, so just start with what you have on hand. There’s time to make it cute, fun, and fine-tuned! I promise.
Use sticky notes, stickers, markers, pens, crayons, cotton balls, pennies—anything you want to mark them off.
What matters most is that it’s a visual sign of progress and completion and not something that the mom does but that the child does.
Permission to Begin SMALL (02:28)
Stop letting your brain tell you you don’t know what to put down.
If there were absolutely no societal pressure… what would you first want to put on that grid for your child?
Now, add Language Arts and Math and maybe even Reading. Just start there this week.

A Cup of Something Delicious and Checked Expectations (04:05)
Today is going to be a good day. Make it a big to-do or don’t, and introduce the new system to your kids.
‘Hey guys, we’re going to try a fun new homeschool system; if it works and we love it, it will stay and keep improving! If it doesn’t, we’re going to keep searching, but for now, we’re going to give it our best and see how it goes. Are you ready?’
Remember that if you come in guns blazing and get upset when today doesn’t go how you hoped, and the whole list doesn’t get finished, and they don’t show instant responsibility…this system is just going to be one of stress and anxiety, and it’s going to fail.
It’s going to take a little time to build this new habit because you’re building self-mastery in your kids, and there are a lot of elements at work! Good elements!
Starting small and giving both your children and YOU room to grow without pressure to do it all is going to be KEY to making this system a success in your family.
P.S. Quit letting your brain tell you you’re going to get behind. There is no behind in homeschooling…and if you’re a mom who just scoffed, rolled your eyes, or tried to argue with me in your head…you needed to hear that more than you know.
With Love from a former Type A, stressed-out nut job of a homeschool mom…
